Krk Bridge – Connection Between Island and Mainland

The Krk Bridge, opened in July 1980, connects the island of Krk with the Croatian mainland, linking the area near Kraljevica with the island near Omišalj. Construction took place between 1976 and 1980 under the direction of engineers Ilija Stojadinović, Vukan Njagulj and Bojan Možina. Originally named “Titov most” after Josip Broz Tito, the bridge is an impressive reinforced concrete structure with a total length of around 1.4 kilometers. It consists of two large arches, with the main span reaching 390 meters, which made it one of the longest concrete arch spans in the world at the time of its completion. The bridge reaches a height of approximately 60 to 70 meters above sea level and stretches across the small island of Sveti Marko.

The bridge plays a crucial role in connecting Krk to the mainland, with more than one million vehicles crossing it every year. Until June 2020, a toll was required, but its removal significantly improved accessibility and increased traffic flow. In addition to road transport, the bridge also carries important infrastructure such as oil pipelines, water supply lines and industrial installations. Due to its exposed location, the bridge is well known for strong winds, especially the Bora, which can lead to temporary traffic restrictions or closures during extreme weather conditions.

Despite its impressive size, the bridge is not accessible to pedestrians, as it is designed exclusively for vehicle traffic. Beyond its technical importance, it is also a landmark of the region and a symbol of connection and development. Visitors who want to experience the bridge up close can head to Voz Bay, one of the best viewpoints, located near Omišalj. With its combination of engineering excellence, natural surroundings and historical significance, the Krk Bridge remains one of the most remarkable structures in Croatia.

Die Krk-Brücke wurde im Juli 1980 eröffnet und verbindet das Festland bei Kraljevica mit der Insel Krk bei Omišalj. Der Bau erfolgte zwischen 1976 und 1980 und zählt bis heute zu den bedeutendsten Infrastrukturprojekten Kroatiens. Mit einer Länge von rund 1,4 Kilometern und einer Höhe von etwa 60 bis 70 Metern gehört sie zu den beeindruckendsten Brückenbauwerken der Region. Besonders bemerkenswert ist der Hauptbogen mit einer Spannweite von 390 Metern, der zur Zeit der Fertigstellung zu den größten Betonbögen weltweit zählte. Die Brücke verläuft über die kleine Insel Sveti Marko und verbindet so das Festland mit Krk.

Neben ihrer technischen Bedeutung spielt die Brücke eine zentrale Rolle für den Verkehr, da jährlich über eine Million Fahrzeuge sie nutzen. Bis Juni 2020 war die Überfahrt mautpflichtig, heute ist sie frei befahrbar und erleichtert die Anreise erheblich. Aufgrund ihrer Lage ist die Brücke starken Winden ausgesetzt, insbesondere der Bora, die vor allem im Winter zu Einschränkungen oder Sperrungen führen kann.

Für Fußgänger ist die Brücke nicht zugänglich, da sie ausschließlich für den Straßenverkehr ausgelegt ist. Zusätzlich dient sie als Träger wichtiger Versorgungsleitungen wie Wasser- und Industrieleitungen. Wer die Brücke aus nächster Nähe erleben möchte, findet in der Bucht Voz einen der besten Aussichtspunkte. Die Krk-Brücke ist damit nicht nur ein funktionales Bauwerk, sondern auch ein Symbol für Fortschritt, Verbindung und die touristische Entwicklung der Insel.

Krčki most otvoren je u srpnju 1980. godine i povezuje kopno kod Kraljevice s otokom Krkom kod Omišlja. Građen između 1976. i 1980. godine, most je jedno od najvažnijih infrastrukturnih postignuća u Hrvatskoj. Dug oko 1,4 kilometra i visok približno 60 do 70 metara, sastoji se od dva velika luka, pri čemu glavni luk ima raspon od 390 metara, što ga je u vrijeme izgradnje svrstalo među najveće betonske lukove na svijetu. Most prelazi preko otočića Sveti Marko i tako povezuje kopno s otokom Krkom.

Most ima ključnu prometnu ulogu jer ga godišnje koristi više od milijun vozila. Do lipnja 2020. godine prelazak se naplaćivao, no danas je most besplatan, što dodatno olakšava dolazak na otok. Zbog izloženosti vremenskim uvjetima, posebno buri, most je poznat po jakim vjetrovima koji ponekad mogu uzrokovati ograničenja prometa ili privremeno zatvaranje.

Most nije otvoren za pješake jer je namijenjen isključivo cestovnom prometu. Osim prometne funkcije, most nosi i važne infrastrukturne instalacije poput vodovoda i industrijskih cjevovoda. Posjetitelji koji žele uživati u pogledu na most mogu se uputiti prema uvali Voz, jednom od najboljih vidikovaca u blizini Omišlja. Krčki most danas je simbol povezanosti, razvoja i važan dio identiteta otoka Krka.
