Wildlife on Krk Island – Safety and Awareness

🇬🇧 The island of Krk is home to typical Mediterranean wildlife. Encounters with animals such as snakes, spiders, scorpions and centipedes are rare and usually not dangerous. Most species avoid humans, and with basic awareness, visitors can safely enjoy nature without concern.

Snakes, Spiders, Scorpions and Centipedes

Snakes can be found on Krk, especially in dry, rocky and less populated areas. Most species are non-venomous. Two venomous species exist in Croatia, the horned viper (Poskok) and the European adder, but they are shy and avoid humans. Bites are very rare and usually occur only if the animal is disturbed. If encountered, keep distance and do not attempt to touch.

Spiders are common across the island, especially in natural areas, stone walls and buildings. The only medically relevant species in Croatia is the black widow. It lives near stones and walls where insects are present. Bites are extremely rare but may require medical treatment. In general, spiders are harmless and avoid contact with humans.

Scorpions are also present on Krk, most commonly small species such as Euscorpius. Their sting is comparable to a wasp sting and usually causes only mild local pain, redness or swelling. They prefer hidden places such as under stones, in cracks or leaf piles and are active at night.

Centipedes can also be found on the island, usually in moist and shaded places such as under stones or in walls. Their bite can be painful but is not dangerous for healthy adults. They are nocturnal and avoid humans.

First Aid and What to Do

In case of a snake bite, remain calm, keep the affected area still and seek medical help immediately. Do not attempt to cut the wound or remove venom.

For spider bites, clean the area, cool it and observe symptoms. If strong pain or unusual reactions occur, medical attention is recommended.

In case of a scorpion sting, clean the area with water and soap and cool it. Symptoms are usually mild. A doctor should be consulted if symptoms are severe or if the affected person is a child, elderly or sensitive.

For centipede bites, clean the area and cool it to reduce pain and swelling. Medical help is usually not required unless strong reactions occur.

When to Seek Medical Help

Medical attention is advised in all cases of snake bites. For spider bites, scorpion stings and centipede bites, a doctor should be consulted if there are strong reactions, increasing pain, swelling or signs of an allergic reaction. Serious complications are very rare.

🇩🇪 Die Insel Krk beherbergt eine typische mediterrane Tierwelt. Begegnungen mit Schlangen, Spinnen, Skorpionen und Tausendfüßern sind selten und in der Regel ungefährlich. Die meisten Tiere meiden den Menschen, sodass bei normaler Vorsicht kein Risiko besteht.

Schlangen, Spinnen, Skorpione und Tausendfüßler

Schlangen kommen auf Krk vor, vor allem in trockenen und steinigen Gebieten. Die meisten Arten sind ungiftig. In Kroatien gibt es zwei giftige Arten, die Hornotter (Poskok). Sie ist scheu und greift nur bei Bedrohung an. Bisse sind sehr selten.

Spinnen sind weit verbreitet, insbesondere in Naturbereichen und Mauern. Die einzige medizinisch relevante Art ist die schwarze Witwe. Sie hält sich meist bei Steinen und Mauern auf. Bisse sind äußerst selten, können aber ärztlich behandelt werden.

Skorpione sind ebenfalls vorhanden, meist kleine Arten. Ihr Stich ist mit einem Wespenstich vergleichbar und verursacht meist nur leichte Schmerzen oder Schwellungen. Sie leben unter Steinen, in Mauern oder Laub und sind nachtaktiv.

Tausendfüßer kommen ebenfalls vor und halten sich in feuchten und schattigen Bereichen auf. Ihr Biss kann schmerzhaft sein, ist jedoch für gesunde Menschen in der Regel ungefährlich.

Erste Hilfe und Verhalten

Bei Schlangenbiss ruhig bleiben, betroffene Stelle ruhigstellen und sofort ärztliche Hilfe aufsuchen.

Bei Spinnenbiss reinigen, kühlen und beobachten. Bei stärkeren Beschwerden Arzt aufsuchen.

Bei Skorpionstich reinigen und kühlen. Bei starken Reaktionen oder Risikogruppen ärztliche Hilfe suchen.

Bei Tausendfüßerbiss reinigen und kühlen. Meist ist keine weitere Behandlung notwendig.

Wann zum Arzt

Bei jedem Schlangenbiss sofort. Bei Spinnenbissen, Skorpionstichen oder Tausendfüßerbissen bei starken Schmerzen, zunehmenden Symptomen oder allergischen Reaktionen. Schwere Verläufe sind sehr selten.

🇭🇷 Otok Krk ima tipičnu mediteransku faunu. Susreti sa zmijama, paucima, škorpionima i stonogama su rijetki i uglavnom nisu opasni uz osnovni oprez.

Zmije, pauci, škorpioni i stonoge

Zmije se nalaze u suhim i kamenitim područjima. Većina nije otrovna. U Hrvatskoj postoje dvije otrovne vrste, poskok i riđovka, ali su plašljive i rijetko napadaju. Ugrizi su vrlo rijetki.

Pauci su česti, a jedina značajnija vrsta je crna udovica. Ujedi su izuzetno rijetki, ali mogu zahtijevati liječničku pomoć.

Škorpioni su prisutni, najčešće male vrste. Ubod je sličan ubodu ose i obično nije opasan.

Stonoge se također mogu pronaći, uglavnom u vlažnim i sjenovitim mjestima. Njihov ugriz može biti bolan, ali nije opasan za većinu ljudi.

Prva pomoć i kada liječniku

Kod ugriza zmije odmah potražiti liječničku pomoć. Kod ugriza pauka, uboda škorpiona i ugriza stonoge očistiti, hladiti i pratiti stanje. Ako se pojave jači simptomi ili alergijska reakcija, obratiti se liječniku.
